Spring 2015 Newsletter

Welcome to the Spring Newsletter and thank you to all those who attended the AGM and voted for the committee members who will run the club for the next 12 months.

We are very lucky to have a team of dedicated volunteers who donate their time to the various activities needed to make the club function and provide the events that we all attend. So thanks to them and from my perspective, I'm proud to be chairman of BWAM for the next 12 months.

We have made significant progress over the last 12 months in bringing an even wider range of events and ride outs and I think we are getting more of a 'club' feeling with new t-shirts and sweatshirts that everyone is proud to wear. We are also getting some stickers made up bearing the club logo, so keep your eye out for those.

At the AGM I asked for ideas for more events and how we could make the club better, and some great thoughts came out. I will be sharing these with you over the summer and starting to implement some this year.

In addition, we have had a banner made up that goes on the roundabout at Poole Quay on Bike Nights and carry a road safety message along with our website address, so the club can become more visible to the bikers of Dorset. So watch out for that and point it out to your friends who haven't yet seen the benefits of the advanced test.

So here's to a summer of great weather and safe biking, and if you are not yet an active member of the club, then have a look at the events calendar and join in on one of our ride outs or come along to our club nights and make yourself known. We are a friendly bunch really!

PS. We hope you like the new format Newsletter - let us know what you think!

We have had several excellent ‘indoor’ events at Club night over the winter and now I am glad to say that the ‘outdoor’ events have now commenced in earnest as the main biking season has started and BWAM has scheduled plenty of organised sessions for all members and associates.

Over the coming months not only will we have the usual selection of members ride clinics and observed associate rides but our ride coordinator Jon Dunn has done an excellent job in scheduling the monthly club rides for the rest of the summer which are listed on the events page of the website and generally occur on the first Sunday of the month unless they coincide with a bank holiday.
Our summer club nights typically take the form of a ride out in June, July and August but this year the July night will be held at Cobhams, our usual venue.  The June and August rides welcome all members and associates with no exception and are likely to head somewhere with food available at the far end!
We also organise a ride every Wednesday evening through to September leaving from Wimborne, again with details on the website.  This year we have in addition to the fish and chip runs on the second Wednesday of the month, a ride on the fourth Wednesday to Henstridge Airfield for their newly organised BBQ and ride the runway bike night, both of these sessions kindly led by Martin Saunders so even if you don’t know all of the back roads of Dorset you will not get lost!
We are also in the process of planning a short break to Yorkshire with the riding being led by Mark Bezzant, details to be posted on the website in due course.  Mark and our Chief Observer Steve Palmer are also planning a ‘full control’ session during the height of the summer, a skills session which is based on this same article on the IAM website and gives a superb overview of bike handling skills and how your bike will react to the actions and forces you put upon it while you are riding, all done in the safety of Winfrith Business Park in the absence of other traffic.
As a club we also support our examiner, Chris Smith at Poole Quay when he is promoting Bike Safe courses.  We would welcome a visit from members down at the Quay on the first Tuesday of each month together with any friends who may be interested in joining Chris or indeed BWAM to improve their biking skills.
If you wish to get in touch about any of the above or anything else please contact me via email at
Enjoy your riding until next time

Getting the club known...

Efforts to publicise BWAM have continued throughout the winter months and the BWAM name and strong image is now better known throughout a wider dealer network and equipment outlets.

BWAM has again been represented at the JP Morgan Transport Fair and on Thursday 12 March, we attended their Castle Lane site and received a number of positive enquiries, indeed, more than in previous years. Time will tell as to whether these enquiries will bear fruit.

Bike Night on Poole Quay commenced at the beginning of April and on the 28th, we attended and had one of the prime spots on the Quay, which, again, attracted a number of strong enquiries. We are currently liaising with Chris Smith and are planning to join up with the Bike Safe Pod each month to promote BWAM and hopefully attract some new Associates to join us.

To promote further the BWAM image, we are planning to have a large banner produced to display on each of the Poole bike night events. In addition, albeit discussions are at an early stage, we would also like to hold a weekend Ride Safe taster event for non-members, probably in the Bournemouth area. This event will comprise of both a theory session/presentation as well as a ‘ride-out’ taster session. We will keep you updated as things develop.

News from the web...

So the good news is the events calendar is update with all this years activities and so get them in your diary now.

The bad news is the forum is broken and I think it may be terminal, so we have now created a FACEBOOK page for you to communicate through and post your pictures. Go to

There has been some work on the new BWAM website (I'm updating the whole thing to make it more phone/tablet friendly) but this is taking time and I haven't had the time recently to put towards it so it is ongoing.  I am hoping to have it finished in 2015!

If you have any ideas you want to share about the website then email me at

....and finally...

Another season starts with a re-elected committee. This year was off to a good start with transition from winter to spring suddenly arriving with warm April sunshine and the characteristic increase of motorcycling activity.

Poole Quay was off to a good start with the first two evenings filling up available parking spots by 6:30 and overflowing to the Baiter car Park. Henstridge Airport (where the Air Ambulance is based) opened up a very successful bike evening, allowing fast runs down the airstrip, stunt riders and a 'Hog Roast'. Perfect weather saw more than 400 motorcyclists enjoying an evening event which if managed well I feel sure will prosper?

If you have any news of events or would recommend dealers or have favourite tea/coffee stops then please forward them on to me for the next Newsletter
