About Bournemouth & Wessex Advanced Motorcyclists
We are the local motorcyclists' group affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Our members show an above average standard of riding which is safe, systematic, and progressive. Our objective is to assist motorcyclists in attaining such a standard and thereby passing the IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test, a nationally recognised measure of riding skill.
Riding guidance is provided by Observers -- experienced riders who have passed both the IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test and an Observer training course. They are keen motorcyclists who have been specially trained to share their riding experience, skills and knowledge with you, to help you pass the IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test. The group is a registered charity and its Observers are all unpaid volunteers.
An individual may be either a Member or an Associate Member of the group. A Member has passed his or her IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test. An Associate Member receives advice from Observers, one-to-one and/or in a group.
The group has a very active social side, with numerous events and organised rides to various destinations throughout the year. See the Events page for more details.
The group shows no prejudice for or against any make or style of motorcycle. It boasts a healthy mix of bikes.
How does the Group operate?
Riding guidance is provided through observed rides. An observed ride is by appointment where the Associate and an Observer agree a mutually convenient date and time, and typically lasts between one and two hours. An Associate prepares for the IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test by undergoing a series of observed rides.
The Group meets for a Club Night including invited speakers every third Monday of the month at the Cobham [formerly Flight Refuelling] Social Club, Wimborne, Dorset.
How much does it cost?
To join the Group as an Associate Member costs £22.00 for the first year (includes documentation), and £16.00 per annum thereafter. There is no charge for the advice and guidance an Associate Member receives. A contribution of £10.00 per observed ride is expected, to cover the cost of the Observer's petrol.
The fee for the IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test is £45.00, including £15.00 for your first year's IAM membership when you pass. Membership of the IAM is required in addition to membership of the group.
How do I join?
Go to the People page and email or telephone the Membership Secretary with your name and contact information, and they will provide further details. If you're interested in joining the group, the Membership Secretary will arrange an initial assessment ride for you, when an Observer will assess your riding and provide you with an insight into advanced riding. Alternatively, just come along and have a chat at our next Club Night.
